Many contemporary political conflicts in Iran result from the clash between tradition and modernity. Traditionalists like Ahmad Ferdid, Reza Davari Ardakani, and Seyyed Hossein Nasr staunchly champion tradition while wholly rejecting modernity. Surprisingly, there has been a significant dearth of scholarly scrutiny directed toward the epistemological foundations underpinning their unwavering support for tradition. This research aims to unveil the epistemological scaffold upon which traditionalists rely, utilizing the "ratio decidendi" method. In contrast to prior studies primarily fixated on traditionalists' envisioned epistemology, this inquiry delves into their innate epistemological perspectives concerning tradition and modernity. The findings suggest that attempting to reconcile tradition and modernity by treating tradition as a whole presents an insurmountable challenge. Alternatively, by conceiving tradition as a collection, subject to augmentation or reduction, a potential pathway emerges for a partial amalgamation of tradition and modernity. Traditionalists, who regard tradition and modernity as immutable and unalterable wholes, aspire to eliminate modernity and establish an all-encompassing traditional system. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that Nasr offers a circumscribed yet contingent framework for the coexistence of tradition and modernity.

Postmodernism, as the current which has emerged out of developments in the modern world, and by enjoying the critical discourse of modernity, has created many effects on various spheres, including in the political arena. In this research, by raising this question that, what is the relation between post-modernism and politics, this hypothesis is formulated that, postmodernism, when implemented in politics, under the influence of relativistic attitudes in the ontological, epistemological and ethical spheres, offers a cynical and skeptical approach to power and rule, which leads to suspension the possibility of any political judgment or political action. In order to test this hypothesis, and by taking advantage of a coherent conceptual framework, first, the genealogy of this current, based on modernity’s process of change and evolution, is investigated and then, by analyzing different aspects of postmodern though in the realm of ontological, epistemological, ethics and politics, the consequences of this approach, on the political and related areas of power and politics, are analyzed.

Tradition has an undeniable entity in Iranian intellectual thinking. Authority and controversiality of the tradition is not necessarily due to its nature but it is caused by significant and influential position in societies possessing civilized and ancient history and rich thoughts. Although intellectuality requires Iranian intellectuals critically scrutinize and contemplate on tradition as one of the most influential factors of Iranian identity, politics and power and provide a situation for its proliferation but in practice it did not happen. Meanwhile, recognizing the evolution of the approaches toward tradition through investigating the ideas of Iranian intellectuals strengthens this hypothesis that amid the tradition-authority contest tradition has been source of self-awareness of Iranian intellectuality, self-awareness that inspired and caused Islamic Revolution of Iran and its continuity.
